Griffith Malo – Zwide

With Zwide, Griffith Malo presents a collaborative project rooted in South African House Music, pairing soulful production with expressive storytelling.

Released through Same Sun Records, the album features C-Blak, Soulfreakah, Azana, Sbani The Vocalist, Tshego TMM, Vencer Café, Andrew Grace, Gifford, Ezra and Soldado. Spanning approximately 116–123 BPM, it explores deep, melodic house while maintaining a steady rhythmic focus.

Malo’s production is built around rounded basslines, restrained percussion and layered keyboard textures rather than oversized drops. The drums keep the tracks moving with a consistent club pulse, while the arrangements leave enough space for the vocals and melodic details to register. Subtle changes in groove, harmony and instrumental density give the songs forward motion without disrupting the album’s relaxed Deep House character.

The pacing is one of Zwide’s strengths. Instead of rushing from one peak to another, the album develops gradually, alternating between vocal-led moments and more groove-focused passages. That measured sequencing makes the project feel suited to a full listening session as well as a late-night dancefloor. The slower emotional build also allows the production’s warmth to become more apparent over time.

The vocal performances provide much of the album’s personality. Soulfreakah brings a grounded, conversational quality to “People Of The Sun,” matching the track’s steady groove with a performance that feels reflective rather than overstated. On “Somebody,” Azana’s clear, emotive delivery gives the song a stronger melodic center, while “UNITE” benefits from Sbani The Vocalist’s communal energy and direct phrasing. Tshego TMM and Vencer Café add contrasting vocal colors to “Alright,” helping the track balance intimacy with a more open, uplifting feel.

“People Of The Sun” is an early standout because its bass movement, spacious arrangement and soulful vocal presence establish the album’s central mood. “Somebody” is more immediately melodic, with Azana’s performance carrying the emotional hook. “Inhlanhla,” featuring C-Blak, leans further into the rhythmic side of the project, using its percussion and vocal interplay to create a stronger dancefloor pull. “Alright” provides a brighter change of pace, while “UNITE” works as one of the album’s most collective and anthem-like moments.

More than a loose collection of tracks, Zwide offers a focused introduction to Malo’s musical world: soulful, proudly African and grounded in Deep House tradition. Its strongest moments come from the balance between polished but understated production, carefully chosen vocalists and arrangements that allow each collaboration to develop naturally.
