Some records belong to a moment. Others become part of the culture. Monique Bingham and Black Coffee’s “Deep In The Bottom (of Africa)” firmly belongs to the latter. More than a decade after the original first made its mark, the record still carries an unmistakable sense of African pride, spirituality and musical identity. Now, Soulfreakah steps forward with a remix that respectfully revisits the classic while giving it a fresh pulse for today’s dance floors.
Soulfreakah understands the assignment to create a timeless rework for a House Music classic. Rather than overwhelming the unmistakable soul of the original, he builds around it. The remix settles into a beautifully controlled groove — warm, patient and deeply rhythmic. At 120 BPM, there is enough space for every element to breathe, allowing the percussion, bass movement and atmospheric layers to gradually pull the listener deeper into the composition.
And then there is Monique Bingham. Her voice remains the spiritual centre of the record. There is an authority in her delivery that transcends the traditional role of a house vocalist. She does not simply sing over the production; she narrates an African experience. Against Black Coffee’s original musical foundation and Soulfreakah’s contemporary interpretation, that vocal feels every bit as powerful today.

The remix appears alongside interpretations from Kasango, Da Capo, Natasha Diggs, Thakzin, Kususa & Argento Dust, Terry Hunter, DJ Pappa, DJ Vivona and SoulBee on the 14-track remix collection.
