Mas O Menos’ second release received critical acclaim from big hitters such as Dixon (‘bliss’), Sean Johnston (‘Ashram is a viber!’), Dimensions Festival (‘a solid release’) and rising star Carista (‘amazing’). The record was stocked in record shops across the globe, including Rush Hour Records in Amsterdam and Rough Trade in Brooklyn. Radio stations around the world received the release positively, including KEXP, KCRW LA and NTS. The label’s aim is now to continue their development and expansion with a third release: Trauma.
Following the triumphant receipt of their second release, the ‘Ashram’ EP, Manchester label Mas O Menos return with a powerful re-imagination of the human psyche.
Their third release, entitled ‘Trauma’, continues DJ and label founder Levi Love’s ascension of the electronic music world, as it marks his second single under the Mas O Menos label.
Trauma is drawn from a recent traumatic experience; Love uses an array of sounds and intricate arrangement to depict the complex nature of trauma and its effect on the human character. The initial sense of sonic comfort is disrupted with the sound of a siren, and yet the arrangement somehow allows the listener to hold the dichotomous ideas in harmony. The percussive overlay gives this one deserved dancefloor viability.
The resolute ethos of Mas O Menos is to facilitate the cross-pollination of South African and Manchester culture, something which resonates strongly with Love – a South African running a Manchester label.
Levi Love, label founder and producer, says: “It was really good and almost cathartic to use melody and sounds in illustrating trauma and its psychological manifestations. After all, music has the ability to explain difficult and complex emotions where words often fall short.”
